YOU'RE NOT ALONE...It is estimated that Eczema affects around 15% of all infants and children. It is not uncommon for children to wake in the morning with blood on their sheets from uncontrolled scratching at night. Atopic dermatitis (AD), often called eczema (pronounced "EK-zema") or atopic eczema, is a very common skin disease. The exact cause is not known, but AD results from a combination of family heredity and a variety of conditions in everyday life that trigger the red, itchy rash. Atopic dermatitis, more commonly called childhood eczema, is a skin disorder that is characterized by dry, itchy skin. It is often called “the itch that rashes.” It starts with an itch. The itch causes the child to scratch. When the child scratches, a rash develops. The more the child scratches, the worse the rash becomes.
